Synopsis

Floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) is a relatively uncommon ocular condition characterized by eyelid laxity and easily everted upper eyelids. It is usually seen in overweight, middle-aged men. Patients present with complaints of ocular redness, blurry vision, irritation, itching, burning, and a stringy / ropy mucoid discharge, all of which may be unilateral or asymmetric. Additionally, excessive laxity of the upper eyelids may result in incomplete eyelid apposition when the patient attempts to close their eyes. A fair percentage of those affected also have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Complaints of loud snoring, gasping for air, erratic sleep patterns, chronic somnolence, and morning headaches suggest OSA. These patients' history often includes meibomian gland dysfunction, chalazia, keratoconus, contact lens use, and seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.
